Maternity Photography Locations: 6 Ideas in NYC and the Hudson Valley

When I say “maternity photoshoot” what pops into your head?
Maybe it’s studio style belly photos…. Or maybe it’s being in a field with a flowy dress + hair and makeup…. There are so many options (and some you may have not even considered yet!) Don't worry, I've got you covered with some fun location ideas right here in NY for your maternity photography session, just pick the one that feels most like you!

1. Parks and Gardens

Parks and gardens offer a peaceful, natural setting that can add a touch of serenity and natural beauty to your maternity photos. Think of the stunning contrast of your maternity glow against the lush greenery or the romantic backdrop of a flower garden in full bloom.

Who is this location right for? This is perfect for maternity sessions that want to include the whole family and/or pets and those who prefer natural lighting and/or golden hour photos.

Who might want to skip this location? If you're not a fan of outdoor elements like unpredictable weather or natural backdrops, or if you're looking for a more controlled environment like a studio, you might want to consider other options.

What should you wear for this environment? For parks and gardens, flowing dresses or gowns work beautifully, especially those in soft, pastel colors or floral patterns to complement the natural surroundings. (link to your client closet and/or suggested gowns here)

2. Cityscapes and Streets

If you love the idea of using your city as a backdrop, you’ll love doing your maternity session in a city setting!
The contrast of contemporary architecture, historic buildings, and bustling streets can create a modern, stylish feel.

Imagine standing in front of an iconic building or walking down a charming street in NYC, capturing the essence of the BEST city in the world as the backdrop to your maternity journey.

Personally, I think NYC is the best city in the world and the vibrant energy of the city, utilizing its unique architecture and urban charm makes a perfect maternity session.

Who is this right for? Cityscape shoots are perfect for moms-to-be who want to incorporate the vibrant, energetic vibe of the city into their photos. It's ideal for those who love the idea of blending their maternity journey with the city landscape they adore.

Who might want to skip this one? If you prefer quiet, natural settings or if the hustle and bustle of city life stresses you out – consider other options! It can be difficult to find parking and we might have to wait for people walking by, so it’s not ideal for those with toddlers or babies.

What should you wear for this environment? For cityscape shoots, dress up a little! A lot of moms go glam for these shoots and wear long, formal dresses.

3. Home Sweet Home: Indoor Shoots

There's no place like home for a cozy, intimate maternity photoshoot. Your own space can provide a comfortable and deeply personal backdrop. It's where you'll bring your little one home, making it a significant location for these memories.

Who is this right for? Perfect for those who cherish privacy and comfort, or for when it’s too cold, snowy or too hot to be outside.. It's also ideal if you want to include personal items or nursery decor in your photos.

Who might want to skip this one? If your home doesn't get much natural light or if you prefer more traditional portraits where everyone is looking and smliing, you might want to choose another option.

What should you wear for this environment? Comfort is key. Soft, cozy outfits or even elegant loungewear can look stunning. Think about including cute slippers or barefoot poses for a relaxed vibe.

4. Beach Bliss: Shorelines and Waterfronts

The beach provides a serene, dreamy setting for maternity photos. The natural light, the sound of waves, and the endless horizon create a magical backdrop.

Who is this right for? Ideal for those who love the water and want a peaceful, natural setting. The beach at sunrise or sunset offers particularly stunning lighting.

Who might want to skip this one? If don’t want to deal with sand, wind and/or bugs a beach location might not be your cup of tea.

What should you wear for this environment? Flowy dresses or skirts work wonderfully against the backdrop of the sea. Think about colors that complement the beach setting like blues, greens, and earth tones.

5. Rustic Charm: Farms and Barns

Farms and barns offer a rustic, charming setting for maternity photos. The natural textures of wood, fields, and rural landscapes add a timeless quality to your pictures.

Who is this right for? Perfect for those who love the countryside and love the idea of the focus being on you and the baby with flowing fields in the background. Who might want to skip this one? If you don’t like posing or “looking and smiling” photos - you might prefer something like a in-home location. What should you wear for this environment? Casual dress with earthy tones.

6. Portrait Studio: Controlled Elegance

Don’t want to worry about bad weather, bugs, sand, excessive wind OR cleaning your house for pictures? A portrait studio offers a controlled environment where lighting and backdrops can be manipulated to create the perfect scene. It's ideal for classic, elegant maternity portraits.

Who is this right for? Great for those who want a more formal, polished look or who prefer not to worry about external factors like weather.

Who might want to skip this one? If you're looking for a more natural, candid feel or want to incorporate natural elements, a studio setting might not be your preference.

NYC and the Hudson Valley offers so many stunning locations for your maternity photography session, the trick is picking one that feels on brand for YOU!

Whether you're drawn to the natural beauty of parks and gardens, the rustic charm of a farm, the elegance of a studio, or the comfort of your own home, there's a perfect spot for every expectant mom's style and preference.

Remember, go with your gut. Which of these stood out to you as the obvious choice or the one that made you excited when you imagined the possibilities?
