Capturing Intimate Family Moments: Why Moms Should Get in the Photograph

When it comes to family photography, one thing often gets overlooked – the importance of having Mom in the picture. We tend to focus on capturing the little one's cute expressions, tiny fingers, and adorable quirks.

But what about Mom? She is an integral part of this beautiful journey, and her presence deserves to be documented as well. However, so often Mom is the one running in multiple directions, feeling burnt out and exhausted, or just not feeling human.

In the moment, it might feel difficult to embrace getting in front of the camera when you simply don't feel like yourself.

However it's important to look at family photography with a wider lens (pun always intended :). You'll cherish these photos now. But in 20 years, when your kids are grown, they will be cherishing these photos too because their young mom is in the frame. All my favorite childhood photos show my beautiful young mom at the age I am now.

I once received this concern from a mom, "I just worry that he will grow up and have pictures with everyone but his mom. And god forbid something happens to me I want him to know how much I love him and cared for him. So really want the memories for him. Just really want to have a fun genuine session where the love of our tiny little family shines through."

This concern stopped me in my tracks. And I knew I'd make an extra effort at every session to take more photos of Mom.

The wonderful thing about a documentary-style approach is there's no need to worry about looking perfect or having a flawless home. The focus is on genuine emotions and the authentic interactions between mom and child. By using natural light and minimal distractions, we can capture the beauty of these real-life moments – no fancy studio setup required.

So, Moms, let me reassure you – you deserve to be in the photograph. Your love, your care, and your presence are an essential part of your children's story. These intimate moments will be treasured not just by you, but by your child as well, as they grow and appreciate the connection they had with their first and forever hero – Mom.
